Household Hazardous Material


Waste Commission of Scott County’s Household Hazardous Material (HHM) Facilities serve Scott County and Rock Island County residents and businesses that generate a limited amount of hazardous material such as paints, pesticides and cleaners.

April-October Appointment Hours
Appointments are available at the Davenport location Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon and on Mondays and Tuesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Appointments are available at the Buffalo location Tuesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Closed Holidays.

November-March Appointment Hours
Appointments are available at the Davenport location Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon and on Mondays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Appointments are available at the Buffalo location Tuesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Closed Holidays.

Fees: There is no charge for Scott and Rock Island County residents to bring household hazardous material to the facility. Rock Island County Waste Management Agency covers the costs for Rock Island County residents. All other counties' residents are charged like businesses - up to a maximum of $35. Businesses are charged according to the type and quantity of waste and should contact the Commission’s special waste coordinator at 563-388-1445 or e-mail him for assistance.

Acceptable Items: Hazardous products can be found throughout the home. Look in the kitchen, bathroom, basement and garage for items such as cleaners, paints, pesticides or automotive products. Download a full listing of acceptable items.

Rules:

  • Please remain in vehicle at all times.
  • Please arrive for your appointment on time and no smoking, please.
  • Keep items in original containers and never mix materials together.
  • Label containers that are unmarked.
  • Glass containers should be packed to prevent breakage.
  • Containers cannot be returned.
  • Transport material separate from passengers and pets in vehicle, preferably in the trunk.

Why do we have to make an appointment?

  • Allows for safety of customers and staff
  • Keeps wait times and lines to a minimum
  • Allows the Waste Commission to provide the proper amount staffing

No appointment needed to dispose of the following items:

  • Batteries
  • CFL bulbs
  • Fluorescent Tubes
  • Oil
  • Oil filters
  • Antifreeze
  • Sharps containers

Directions to Landfill/Buffalo Facility: The Household Hazardous Material Permanent Facility is located at the Scott Area Landfill, located on County Road Y-48 three miles south of Highway 61 (West River Drive). From Davenport, take River Drive west past the I-280 interchange to the next intersection with a stoplight. Turn left (south) onto Y-48 and the Landfill is 3 miles down on the left hand side of the road. The HHM Facility is the smaller brick building on the right. Park under the canopy and remain in your vehicle.

Directions to Recycling Center/Davenport Facility: The Household Hazardous Material Satellite Facility is located at 5640 Carey Avenue, Davenport. Take Brady Street north to 53rd Street, turn right (east) on to 53rd Street. Travel one mile and take a left (north) on to Carey Avenue. Follow Carey all the way to the end. Enter the Recycling Center parking lot and park under the HHM Satellite Facility canopy. Remain in your vehicle.
