Recycling

Information on the how's and why's of recycling.
What items can I recycle?
Scott County has a dual-stream recycling system, meaning you need to keep paper products separate from containers. These items can be kept in separate bins or separate components of a recycling cart, or paper products can be placed inside a paper bag and placed inside the recycling bin with the containers. Acceptable paper products include: newspaper, office paper, envelopes, bulk mail, magazines, catalogs, boxboard (shoeboxes, cereal boxes, etc.) and corrugated cardboard. Acceptable containers include #1 and #2 plastics, steel cans, aluminum cans and glass food and beverage jars and containers. See a full listing here.

If a product has the three arrows symbol on it, does that mean it’s recyclable?
Not necessarily. The three arrows symbol is not an indication that an item can be recycled. The recycling symbol is unregulated, meaning that no authority controls who places the symbol on what product, be it recyclable or not.

What does the number inside the three arrows symbol mean?
The plastics industry uses the numbers as a coding system to identify resin types. It is not meant to indicate recyclability. In Scott County, we are able to recycle items with a #1 or #2 inside the three arrows (mobius) symbol.
